In earlier versions of Twitter DM, you can only send a message if you are following another user. In the new Twitter DM feature, there is no need to follow another user to start a private chat.

1) Update Your Settings

Login to your Twitter account and go to your account’s security & privacy settings. Tick the check box that says “Receive Direct Messages From Anyone” and click SAVE CHANGES.

If you don’t tick the checkbox, then only users you follow will be able to send you a DM.

2) Create A Custom Direct Message URL

Keep your Twitter numeric ID handy. You can find in your Twitter account settings. For example, your ID is 00000000, append this to the following URL:
https://twitter.com/messages/compose?recipient_id=00000000

Replace 00000000 with your Twitter numeric ID.

Now when you share above URL with you numeric ID in Twitter discussion, it will let other user to start a conversion by clicking Send A Private Message.
